Dievas supports Project Manta

Dievas, the Singapore owned watch company, has committed support to “Project Manta”, a University of Queensland marine research project investigating the biology and ecology of the gentle giants of the ocean, manta rays. Part of the proceeds of each sale of their newly launch divers watch, the “AQUALUNA”, will be donated to the project. “AQUALUNA” is a 'modern thinking mans timepiece' with the purchase of each Swiss made dive watch directly contributing to marine conservation and ocean health research.

The manta ray, Manta birostris, is the world’s largest ray, reaching a disc width of up to seven metres. It is an iconic species with a worldwide distribution. As a harmless giant of the oceans it attracts considerable interest from the general public and is the subject of commercial dive-tourism industries worth millions of dollars in many parts of the world, including Australia.

Unfortunately, manta rays are targeted for fisheries in various parts of the world and are listed as vulnerable to extinction on the IUCN Red List for Threatened Species.
Although manta rays are commonly seen and dived with globally, there is relatively little is known about most aspects of the biology and ecology of manta rays, and there is currently no scientific data available on the Australian east coast population. Including basic information such as: How many are there? How long do they live? How often do they reproduce? Do they migrate across international boundries? What will be the long-term consequences of climate change on the species?
”Project Manta” is rectifying this disturbing lack of data through a multidisciplinary study of the ecology, conservation biology, and potential impacts of climate change on these iconic species. Using cutting edge tagging and satellite technology, “Project Manta” is engaging scientists, industry partners and the general public in a comprehensive study of manta rays that will simultaneously enhance our knowledge of the species and provide a basis for long-term monitoring of the environment.

“Project Manta” together with Dievas is calling divers around the world, to join in their efforts to understand these gentle giants and to directly contribute to an important marine conservation research project. The back of each watchcase has the image of a manta ray, to remind divers of the positive contributions they made to this research project.
